One of the most common constituents of a medieval meal, either as part of a banquet or as a small snack, were sops , pieces of bread with which a liquid like wine , soup , broth , or sauce could be soaked up and eaten. After the first few days, most people report feeling very good, with even more energy than before. These fasts were occasionally for a full day and required total abstinence. Yesterday I got up and ate blueberry pancakes, which tasted delicious.
